>>> Day 1351, 03:54

Nomad #647 logging in. I've just entered a new planet's orbit. I'm going to name this one Abori IV. So far, the atmosphere seems OK, but I'll need to land to collect more data.

Some screen dumps from my in-development free Perihelion, laid out with Affinity Publisher and with thanks to all the lovely people who mark their amazing artwork as .

Not TOO bad for a fella with very little artistic skill, even if I do say so myself.

It's been a shit day. Self medicating with take out kebab while trying not to piss myself laughing at the mental health jokes being made by Taylor Tomlinson on Netflix. 😂

@Gina Gotta see how hot the compost is! You can buy specialist thermometers with long probes and the dials look a bit like that.

Oh my, things are busying up aren't they? I should probably spend a little time refreshing the info page and stuff like that.

Grumble, grumble. All you lovely new folks coming into my federated timeline and tooting your amusing and heartwarming messages. I remember when things were quiet 'round here!

Writing really helps my mental health. I'd forgotten how much.

I love world-building and creating headspaces for people to explore. Since rediscovering my energy and applying myself to my latest project (linked), properly, for the first time in decades I've written almost every night.

I've just hit 200 pages. This feels like a milestone. I suspect once "finished", I'll be looking at ~300 pages PDF. This feels good. Next month: playtesting

Given the influx of new uses to the fediverse (even if not really many are signing up at our li'l instance) this is now done. From orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

After eight years (albeit two of them COVID), we've finally finished our D&D 5e campaign and succeeded against Tiamat.

The finale included a hand-built scale model of her on a scale map that filled the hall we game in. Cuz that's how we roll (role?)

Next month we start playtesting my hard sci-fi starting with session zero 😎

A slow, four hour wander in the Peaks. We walked the Dragon's Back, a set of bizarre limestone "spines" the stand out and are often cited as the only true peaks in the Peak District. They're also rather steep and require a proper climber's scramble, especially if you go off piste as we did. Good fun. Exhausted. In pain. Going for a bath now. It's hard being almost-fifty. 😂

An unhelpful reminder that trauma never really goes away. Once your amygdala has marked that traumatic data stream and pattern-matches it to something you're currently experiencing, out it can come, with a vengeance.

But that doesn't mean it can't remain dormant most of the time, and when it does spring from its lair, it's unmanageable.

I've had a shit week. Trauma has reared its head again. Nightmares. No sleep. The usual. But here I am, 647 days sober, 19kg lighter and doing okay.

☮️ ❤️

As a heads-up, I'm going to be cleaning the userbase at some point very soon.

"Why?", you ask. "There are, like, two people on and you're one of them!"

Good question. Mainly because I can see a lot of users with 0 posts all signing up from the same location, following the same users on other instances, seemingly to boost follow count. Which is a very Twitter thing to do. And you all know how I feel about Twitter.

So, I'm going to, grumpily, purge with impunity - soon (tm).

Anyone into Penetration Testing and possibly able to carry out out and provide a report?

Drop me a message with your details so we can chat.

Boosts Welcome.

I almost signed up a Twitter account for my stuff this morning. Fortunately, in the length of time, it took them to send me a confirmation code, I remembered:

(a) I don't need to really market it, as it's just a bit of fun for myself.

(b) I'd rather stab myself in the dick with a rusty fork than use Twitter.

Close call. Close call.

of Mastodon, lend me your ears!

I need suggestions as to sources of licensable .

I mistakenly picked up a couple of pieces from iStock (fuck Getty) and I've licensed a few pieces from ArtStation, but its market is pretty tiny.

Looking for hard -fi, , inspired art. Think Neill Blomkamp meets The Expanse. This is for an that will be free (under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) but (obvs) the art will be paid for. Boosts ok! Itch link to the (in-dev) game is in my bio.

Ok, folks - I need lots of reach on this post. I'm the board chair for an autistic-led charity, and after 40 years of building networks and working with FOSS I don't need convincing. But: Microsoft hands out free licenses to Office365 for charities, while a good Nextcloud setup would be about £1000/yr (with support). Are there any funders who will offer long-term institutional support to help charities move to FOSS? If not, why not, and how do we fix this?

The speed paints looked shit on powered armour. I've ended up stripping the mini right back and I'll build up lots of undercoat and do it the old-fashioned way. Grumpier than usual now.

I started using an airbrush on my minis yesterday. Not only is it a LOT of fun, but the process of undercoating is really smooth and leaves a fantastic finish + it's really easy to apply zenithal highlights. Much better than using a spray can. I...undercoated and zenithal'd ALL THE THINGS.

We're finishing up a 5 year D&D campaign over the next month and moving onto SLA Industries, so I have a really cool Infinity miniature I'm working on for SLA. Off to try out my new speed paints.

Tweaking some layout and design elements for the first 58 pages (which is basically character creation) of my Perihelion. The character sheet was pretty bland before, it feels like it works a lot better now I've tied the blue into the main document scheme.
